How To Light a Hallway: Lighting Ideas and Tips
The hallway is a busy place. It’s a place that welcomes you home at the end of a long day, greets guests and helps your house flow. 1. Start with the size & shape of your hallway

If you have a particularly long hallway, don't rely on one light source. A combination of ceiling lights and wall lights can help create a more balanced and inviting look.
2. Make a statement with a hallway pendant
Your hallway is a great place to introduce a statement light. As the first impression of your home, a beautiful pendant or chandelier can set the tone for the rest of your interior.

Top tip: Always check the height of your ceiling and the drop of your pendant before buying. You want your light to make an impact without becoming an obstacle!
3. Use wall lights to create a warm glow
Wall lights are one of our favourite choices for hallway lighting. They provide a softer, more ambient glow than a central ceiling light and can also add plenty of personality.
Position wall lights along a longer hallway to create an even spread of light, or use a pair either side of a mirror, console table or piece of artwork.
For a particularly cosy feel, choose wall lights with fabric shades or opal glass, which help diffuse the light and create a softer atmosphere.
4. Layer your hallway lighting
The secret to a well-lit hallway isn't necessarily having one incredibly bright light — it's having layers of light.
Try combining different types of lighting to create a more considered scheme:
- Ceiling lights for general illumination
- Wall lights for ambient lighting
- Table lamps on a console for a softer glow
- Picture lights to highlight artwork
- Accent lighting to draw attention to architectural features
Layering your lighting allows you to change the atmosphere depending on the time of day. Brighten things up when you're looking for your keys in the morning, then switch to softer lighting in the evening.
5. Don't forget your console table
If you have space for a console table in your hallway, don't leave it out of your lighting scheme.
A table lamp can create a warm pool of light and instantly make an entrance feel more homely. It also gives you an opportunity to introduce another texture, shape or finish into the space.
For a classic look, pair a ceramic or glass lamp with a fabric shade. For something more contemporary, look for sculptural table lamps that double as decorative accessories.
6. Add a mirror to reflect the light
Hallways can often be darker than other rooms, particularly if they don't have much natural light. A well-placed mirror can help make the space feel brighter and more spacious by reflecting both natural and artificial light.
Try placing a mirror opposite or near a wall light, pendant or table lamp. Not only will it help bounce light around the hallway, but it can also create a beautiful layered effect.
7. Choose the right colour temperature
The colour temperature of your bulbs can make a big difference to how your hallway feels.
For a warm and welcoming atmosphere, we recommend choosing a warm white light, typically around 2700K - 3000K. This works particularly well in traditional and neutral interiors and complements warm finishes such as brass, bronze and antique brass.
Cooler white light can feel more contemporary, but in a hallway it can sometimes feel a little stark. If you're looking to create that welcoming 'come on in' feeling, warmer lighting is usually the way to go.
8. Think about the finishes
Hallway lighting is an opportunity to introduce another decorative finish into your home.
Brushed brass and antique brass can add warmth and work beautifully in both traditional and contemporary interiors. Polished chrome and nickel offer a cleaner, more modern feel, while black finishes can create contrast and make a stronger statement.
Don't be afraid to mix metals, either. Your hallway lighting doesn't have to match every other metal finish in your home perfectly. Instead, consider choosing finishes that complement the wider scheme.
9. Don't forget dimmers
A hallway doesn't always need to be brightly illuminated, particularly in the evening. Installing dimmable lighting gives you much more control over the atmosphere.
A brighter setting is useful when you need practical lighting, while a softer setting can create a more relaxed and welcoming feel when you're entertaining or winding down for the evening.
Just remember to check that both the fitting and your chosen bulbs are compatible with dimming.
